Information
Air compressors play an
important role in an industrial environment, providing the compressed air to the
pneumatic controls, valves, process applications and various instruments
throughout the plant. In industrial environments, it is critical that gaseous
contaminants and particulate matter be removed from the intake air stream of all
air compressors. Unfortunately, standard particulate filters offer insufficient
protection.
The CIF is a non-powered
unit designed to remove gaseous contaminants that attack intercoolers and other
parts of centrifugal compressors, as well as downstream instrumentation. The CIF
contains an optional rain louver, pre-filter, two or three banks of modules and
a high efficiency final filter. The CIF connects to the compressor with the
outlet plenum. Galvanized metal is the standard material used for the
construction of the unit housing. Construction is also available in cold rolled
steel, aluminum and stainless steel.

THE CIF
SYSTEM
THE AIR PURIFICATION
PROCESS
- Air moves through the CIF
system in several sections, each treating the air and removing various airborne
contaminants.
- Purafil media within the
CIF reacts with and neutralizes corrosive contaminants in the intake air,
preventing corrosion within the compressor.
If the ambient intake air
contains corrosive gases such as Sulfur Dioxide (SO2),
Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), and
Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), it
will raise the acidity level of the compressed air creating a corrosive
condensate which attacks metal surfaces.

Critical copper, aluminum
and cast steel compressor parts (photo) are
the most susceptible to these corrosive gases. An air compressor
intercooler can be severely damaged if it comes in contact with this corrosive
condensate. Other key components of the compressor - impellers, diffusers and
the compressor casings - can also be damaged.
SECTION 1
The first section of the
process is a particulate prefilter designed to remove dust and dirt. This
prefilter removes particulates 10 microns in diameter or greater. The primary
purpose of the prefilter is to protect the chemical filters and the high
efficiency final filter. The prefilter retains its structural integrity in moist
environments and it, therefore, also serves as a low efficiency mist
eliminator.
SECTION 2
The second section is the
chemical filtration section where Purafil chemical media is used to remove
gaseous contaminants from the air stream. Multiple stages of media may be
required.
SECTION 3
The last section is the
final particulate filter. This filter is a high efficiency filter which removes
particulates equal to or greater than 1-2
microns.
Purafil, Inc., the
industry leader in gas-phase filtration, developed the Compressor Intake Filter
(CIF) system to remove corrosive gases such as Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), and
Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S). These
gases increase acidity levels which lead to decreased compressor efficiency.
Interestingly, concentration levels of these gases, which are acceptable for
humans, are dangerously high for air compressors. The service life of a
compressor is extended and costly repairs are avoided when corrosive gases are
removed from the intake air stream.
The CIF is a multi-stage,
highly efficient air purification system that removes gases and particulates,
and prevents corrosion caused by airborne contaminants. In the absence of CIF
protection, these contaminants can result in reduced efficiency, costly repairs,
and equipment downtime.
Industry leaders recognize
Purafil's expertise in this field and rely upon Purafil to protect their
expensive air compressors from corrosive gases commonly found in industrial
environments.
Purafil's CIF is
compatible with most major air compressor manufacturers, including
Ingersoll-Rand, Elliott, Demag, IHI, Joy Cooper, and Atlas Copco to name a
few.
